Alder is a soft hardwood with a fine, straight grain and an even texture. It has a light brown color with subtle yellow or reddish undertones. The difference between alder’s heartwood and sapwood is minimal, creating a consistent appearance.
Alder does not significantly darken or change color when exposed to light or heat, unlike many other wood species. It accepts stains and finishes exceptionally well, making it a versatile choice for a variety of looks. Because it is one of the softer hardwoods, it can be more susceptible to dents and wear. Standard alder may include small, tight knots.
Alder is also available in a Rustic option, which highlights natural knots and unique wood characteristics for added texture and character. Not all door styles are available in Rustic Alder, so it’s best to confirm availability with your designer.
